A blog with a purpose

I think one of the greatest flaws in teaching is when the students do not understand the relevance of what they're learning. Every student at some point or another has said, "When am I ever going to need this?" Through this blog I hope to show students some practical and cool uses of geometry in the world. I will also post any interesting geometry news.

I agree wholeheartedly.

In my first year of college I had two completely opposite teachers. One was a monotonic speaker who did nothing but restate the materials in the text book. His lectures were boring and uninspiring. I think he was teaching simply for the cash.

I had another teacher who was also working in industry. He often discussed how the material we were learning was directly related to his job. He was always bringing up real world problems from his job and showing us how the material we were learning helped him solve these problems. I think he was teaching mainly for fun.

Someday I hope to run into this person. I’d like to thank him for his guidance and inspiration.
